Overview

Stupid Girl is the cover art designed for an original music release by the artist Dhridha . The goal was to create a visual identity that reflects the mood, personality, and creative tone of the music while standing out on streaming platforms and promotional assets.

The Challenge

Album/EP artwork operates at very small thumbnail sizes on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and social feeds, yet it also needs presence at large scale on posters or merch. The challenge was to:

  • Capture the emotional and stylistic essence of the music

  • Ensure clarity and impact at both micro (thumbnail) and macro (poster/vinyl) scales

  • Balance artistic expression with clean, functional design

  • Create a visual identity that could extend into future releases or social content

EP artwork is not just “illustration” — it’s the visual voice of the music and often the first impression listeners get before hearing a single note.

Creative Approach

To start, I interpreted the music’s tone and lyrics to identify core themes that could inform the visual direction — for example:

  • Mood (raw, introspective, defiant, etc.) - Somber, sunshine, moody fields, regret, playfulness

  • Texture (gritty, soft, minimal, bold) - minimal, aesthetic

  • Persona (character, attitude, emotion) - soft regret, bittersweet

This conceptual grounding ensured the design wasn’t just “pretty,” but meaningful.

The First Design Iteration

The first iteration captured the initial direction and photoshoot - sunshine, warm but also a hint of sadness, somber, and bittersweet.

The Second Design Iteration

After the first iteration, the client had done another photoshoot and wanted to go in a different direction. She wanted colder tones to represent the sadness and regret of the album and a more serious tone set by the visuals

The Final Iteration

Distinctive visual identity tailored to the music’s tone

  • Artwork optimized for digital platforms with strong thumbnail clarity

  • Expanded creative assets ready for promotional rollout

  • Delivered final files ahead of distribution deadlines
